Session 1: Inaugural Session
29th September, 2007
Summary: Introduction to GNU/Linux Distributions. Using Live CDs.
Getting familiar with different desktops.
Activity : The focus for the first meeting of the LUKSH was to spread the concept of Free Software Open Source among NGOs and individuals, and making them aware of an alternative operating system which is much more cost effective and reliable. The session began with self-introductions and participants stated what they would like to do with the idea of LUKSH. The participants were from a range of backgrounds: development professionals, computer science students, a cyber cafe owners' association organiser and other interested people.
Introduce the GNU/Linux operating system, its different distributions and choosing a distribution which suits one's needs. Different GNU/Linux Desktops like KDE and GNOME were introduced. Questions arose on how to choose a specific operating system based on one's computer memory and capacity..
The concept of a live CD introduced to the participants. A practical demo and interactive session followed with participants trying out different live CDs such as Ubuntu and Xbuntu and Knoppix on different laptops.
One of the challenges of the first meeting was that the participants were from very different levels of experience. There were some who had been using FOSS for some time and were looking to experiment and collaborate with others at a higher level. At the same time most were first time users who had only heard of FOSS and came to find out more about it. Apart from these, there were others in the middle. Dealing with participants at multiple levels is one of the challenges in running a club like this.
This wiki has been created for the LUKSH,to share information.
